After five years in Aden, in December 1957, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani returned to Mumbai, the business, the financial and commercial capital of India. In Mumbai, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani had his first office on the first floor at 240, Narsee Natha Street, Bhaath Bazaar (or Masjid Bunder, as it is also known).

In February 1958, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani started Reliance Commercial Corporation in partnership with Shri Trambhakbhai Damani. When asked why he chose to name his company Reliance, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani said, 'I saw it written somewhere and it stayed in my mind.'

The Reliance Commercial Corporation office at Masjid Bandar was a 500 sq. ft space rented for Rs.150. The office was shared with a doctor's clinic, separated by a wooden partition. It only had one desk, two chairs, and a telephone, which was shared between Shri Dhirubhai Ambani and the doctor.
